The exhibition A Man, A Monster & The Sea by Mulyana (also known as Mang Moel) offers a deep, introspective visual journey that explores personal identity, transformation, and the complex relationship between humans and nature. Central to the exhibition is the character of Mogus, Mulyana’s alter ego, who embodies both the human struggle with internal conflict and the connection to the vast, mysterious world beneath the sea.
Through vibrant colors and a rich, magical marine ecosystem, Mulyana creates an imaginary underwater world where Mogus confronts the duality of human nature—the beauty and fragility of existence and the battle between self and the “monster” within. This symbolic character becomes a metaphor for transformation, survival, and the challenges faced on both a personal and environmental level.
By drawing parallels between human identity and the ocean’s infinite depths, Mulyana invites audiences to reflect on their journeys of self-discovery, resilience, and the delicate balance between human life and the natural world.
